Top Tips to Manage a Fear of Flying
1. Stop Watching Disaster Movies! Some people who have a fear of flying are drawn towards those TV specials and cinematic epics that revolve around the subject of flying disasters. Others continually create a disaster movie in their mind, they see themselves strapped into their seats diving into oblivion, time and again. This exacerbates their problem. Chocolate box movies only please, with nice happy endings.
2. Learn to Belly Breathe: That’s right…are you a chest lifter? If when you breathe in deeply you raise your shoulders and chest rather than pushing out your tummy it’s time to practise breathing deeply and slowly into your tummy, following you breath with your minds’ eye. When nervous, this is the fastest way imaginable to centre yourself and keep yourself in the present moment.
3. Relinquish Control : Fear of flying is often about control: Ummm, wanting more control, feeling out of control , wanting your hands on the controls or a variation on that theme. Remember the pilots and crew are well trained in flying planes, probably better trained than you are in flying a plane…..trust a little.
4. Distraction: It is your thoughts which are triggering your emotional experience of fear. Distract your mind with music and books, caring for someone else can often help and say Stop! To those circulating thoughts and within two minutes all panic will be over.
5. Close your Mouth: If you actually experience a panic attack keep your mouth closed and breathe through your nose. Within a very short period of time your blood chemistry will rebalance and you will be able to cope. Much less obvious and as effective as the traditional paper bag.
